Change Your Oil – Later, Much Later

How often should you change your oil?  If you’re like most of us, its been DRILLED into our heads that you SHOULD change your oil EVERY 3,000 miles.  That and if you’ve ever been to a quick oil change shop, they put a little sticker in your windshield telling you at what mileage to come BACK in to have your oil changed and guess what? its EVERY 3,000 miles.

Now if I was selling oil, I’d want you to come in EVERY 3,000 miles REGARDLESS of what the Auto Manufacturers say, because I only make money when you come in, the more often, the better (for me, not necessarily you).

Today’s engines are made better, with more precision, and with the additives that have been incorporated into the motor oils, last a lot longer.   Check your Owner’s Manual, you will probably find that THEIR recommendation is every 7,500 miles which is 2 1/2 times longer than the oil change shops tell you.  They’ve done this due to testing the oil at different intervals to see if its broken down enough to warrant an oil change.

600 million gallons of motor oil is disposed of every year here in the U.S., to put that into perspective, that’s just a little over 4 Oil Tankers like the Exxon Valdez we either pour down the sewers, land fills, or recycle.  Of the 600 million gallons, ONLY 50 million are reported as having been re-processed, so the vast majority is polluting the Earth.

I’m personally a BIG fan of synthetic motor oils, mostly for a couple of reasons.  1) I can go 25,000 miles between oil changes and 2) I get better peace of mind knowing that I have BETTER protection for my engine.

But I found out recently that ALL “Synthetics” are not made synthetically as in “chemically created”.  Motor oils come in 5 groups, petroleums are in groups 1 through 3 and true totally synthetics are groups 4 and 5.  However, after a court battle, Group 3 of the Petroleum based oils has been reclassified as a “synthetic” even though it contains NO chemically created synthetic molecules.  And the “blended” synthetics are a combination of Group2 and Group 3.

Independent tests have shown Amsoil to be by far the best motor oil you can get, and it is a full Group 4 Synthetic.

So take the time to see when your Owner’s Manual says to change the oil, and take a serious look at true Synthetics, they are far more cost effective, perform far better, and protect your engine extending the life of your engine significantly.

And if you really want to get out of the “change your oil” rut, look into a bypass filtration system.  When used with Group 4 or Group 5 class full synthetics, gives your engine BETTER protection with LESS impurities for A LOT longer.  Imagine having better protection for 60,000 + miles and some have given testimonials that they are approaching 200,000 miles without changing their oil.

These bypass filtration systems have a finer filter (3 microns) for the high flow and scrub out impurities in the scrub filter down to less than 1 micron.  Synthetic oils DON’T breakdown and thus creating their own sludge like petroleum based oils do, so having a filtration system that ensures impurities are removed is almost a perfect scenario.

Either way, using synthetics and/or installing a bypass filtration system will reduce the oil that is being changed and dumped or recycled.
